YAYASAN UEM PROVIDES OVER RM925,000 IN FINANCIAL AID TO 257 B40 UNIVERSITY STUDENTS
KUALA LUMPUR, 30 April 2019 – Yayasan UEM has set aside over RM925,000 for its Student Aid programme which aims at assisting living expenses of 257 B40 university students across local universities.
This Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, first of its kind to be undertaken by Yayasan UEM, is in line with the efforts undertaken by the Government of Malaysia in addressing the plight of students from the B40 income family as reported over the last few months, in which many of them are not able to afford more than a meal daily.
Aishah Nor, Chief Executive Officer of Yayasan UEM said, “The daily struggle faced by B40 students is a serious issue – it is not just based on the news that we read but also actual stories we heard during our interaction with university students from time to time. As UEM Group continuously strives to be a socially responsible entity, it is our hope that by introducing this Student Aid programme, via Yayasan UEM, the philanthropic arm of UEM Group, we will be able to complement other initiatives undertaken by the Government in addressing this issue.”
Under this programme, a total of 257 students who are from underprivileged background have been identified to receive a one-off financial aid totalling RM3,600 per student which they can use to support their other expenses such as transportation and materials needed for their course projects.
The recipients comprise those studying at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) in Perlis and Penang.
To date, representatives from Yayasan UEM have visited the recipients at UiTM Perlis and UUM (on 16 April 2019) as well as UiTM Pulau Pinang and USM (on 17 April 2019) to personally meet with each of them as well as to contribute some basic essentials. The visit to the remaining recipients will be undertaken by Yayasan UEM next month.
“At UEM Group, it is our belief that equally important as providing access to education is the need to ensure that the students are in good conditions to receive the education. We recognise that cost of living is indeed a challenge especially to B40 students, and we want to help play our role to ensure it will not be a hindrance for them to do well in their studies”, added Aishah Nor.
Student Aid programme is one of the community-focused assistance provided by Yayasan UEM. Focusing on two core areas namely Education and Community Assistance, Yayasan UEM also undertakes various other CSR initiatives including providing scholarship for students to continue their tertiary educations, Back-to-School programme, PINTAR School Adoption Programme, medical assistance for underprivileged patients at Hospital Canselor Tuanku Mukhriz and University Malaya Medical Centre, as well as tuition programme.
