KUALA LUMPUR, 24 January 2019 – UEM Edgenta Berhad (UEM Edgenta), the leading Asset Management and Infrastructure Solutions company in the region, revealed its active adoption of modern technologies; one of which is the Road Asset Management System or RAMS, a next-generation solution in highway asset management and optimisation.

RAMS – a planning tool database which stores and presents road data information, planning of short and long-term road maintenance – is currently being used in all UEM Edgenta managed highways and roads in Malaysia totalling nearly 2,500 kilometres.

With RAMS, personnel of UEM Edgenta specifically Edgenta Infrastructure Services division, are able to manage information more efficiently prior to commencing maintenance works. RAMS allows for crucial decision making and prioritising which stretch of the highways or roads that require repairs and maintenance – in a nutshell, doing the right maintenance works at the right locations. The technology is also used to create budgets and maximises economic returns of the investments made for the highway and road network.

This was revealed by Dato’ Azmir Merican, UEM Edgenta’s Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer during a visit by Works Minister, YB Tuan Baru Bian to the Company’s headquarters at Menara UEM, Bangsar South, Kuala Lumpur.


Accompanying the Minister of Works was the Ministry’s Secretary General, Dato’ Dr. Syed Omar Sharifuddin bin Syed Ikhsan, Director General of the Public Works Department, Dato' Sri Ir. Dr. Roslan bin Md Taha, Director General of the Malaysian Highway Association, Dato’ Sr. Aziz bin Abdullah and Chief Executive Officer of the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), Dato’ Ir. Ahmad ‘Asri Abdul Hamid, who were taken for a tour of UEM Edgenta’s Command & Contact Centre (C&C), a state-of-the-art facility that is used to deliver its Asset Management services.

C&C is a hub for data intelligence and analytics for Internet of Things (IoT) and Ambient Intelligence which feeds information from all the assets under UEM Edgenta’s care across the nation and this include highway maintenance, hospital support services as well as property and facility management.
Highlights of the visit by the Works Minister include a briefing on UEM Edgenta’s statistical performance and innovation initiatives across its operations in the Infrastructure Services division together with OPUS Consultants, UEM Edgenta’s Asset Consultancy arm, that looks after the North-South Expressway (NSE) and Lebuhraya Pantai Timur 2 (LPT2).

“Highway and road infrastructure is a major investment and we have been tasked to maintain, improve, and preserve this asset. Rather than continue with the conventional type of maintenance, RAMS’ data and information allows us to facilitate the decision-making process in a timely manner. We are able to improve and prioritise in terms of optimal timing of maintenance works that are needed at a particular location. With RAMS, the target is to minimise the total cost of highway maintenance while at the same time ensure that the highways are safe for motorists,” said Dato’ Azmir.

He went on to add that in the last three (3) years, UEM Edgenta had spent more than RM100 million on capital expenditure (CAPEX) to mechanize & automate, introduce new processes, upgrade HSSE practices & capabilities and adopt cutting-edge technology to improve its service delivery.
