PLUS, the expressway arm of UEM Group, is committed to a path of sustainable growth by balancing profitable growth, social and environmental responsibilities.
While PLUS have made considerable inroads in its path towards becoming more sustainable, the key challenge ahead will be for PLUS to meet the growing needs of the transport sector while growing sustainably, reducing carbon output and staying competitive.

In 2021, UEM Sunrise, the township and property development arm of UEM Group, strengthened its sustainability journey by establishing the UEM Sunrise Sustainability Blueprint, which sets out its sustainability roadmap towards reaching Carbon Neutrality 2050.
Starting with building a low-carbon future by 2030, the UEM Sunrise Sustainability Blueprint anchors on four pillars – liveability, affordability, sustainability and resilience.
Energy Efficiency
UEM Sunrise operates with the best practices and uses energy-efficient equipment throughout its operations that contribute to carbon emissions reduction.
Water Efficiency
To manage water consumption via proper water piping maintenance, UEM Sunrise uses suitable water fittings and utilises recycled water.
Waste Management
UEM Sunrise controls waste generation through a waste management hierarchy which includes prevention from the source and recycling practices.
Environmental Protection
UEM Sunrise ensures to comply with all relevant environmental-related acts and regulations.
KAIA Heights
A GreenRE silver certification recipient, KAIA Heights has gone above and beyond in its design, conserving almost 40% of the existing forestry around the residence.
It was designed with non-toxic, ethical, and sustainable materials, utilising compost recycled from horticulture waste and equipped with a rainwater irrigation system.
With natural ventilation and lighting, UEM Sunrise ensures KAIA Heights cuts down on energy use while providing for its residents' well-being and mental health through communal facilities that promote an active lifestyle while surrounded by nature.
Aspira Gardens
Designed to be solar panel-ready, with solar-powered streetlights along the roads to guide residents’ homes, Aspira Gardens is the first low-density residential enclave in Johor.
Units are constructed to be as water-efficient as possible, with rainwater harvesting systems available for certain homes.
Aspira Gardens is equipped with eco-friendly community spaces such as the recycling centre, treehouse-style playground, and open greenery, which allow families to create new memories while playing their part in creating a cleaner planet.
PINTAR Programme
Promoting Intelligence, Nurturing Talent And Advocate Responsibility (PINTAR) is a collaborative social responsibility initiative to improve students’ motivation via education, based on four core modules;
Motivational and Team Building Programme, Educational Support Programme, Capability & Capacity Building and Reducing Vulnerabilities & Social Issues.
BukuHubs Programme
In collaboration with the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT), this community library project was launched to ease people to read and donate books.
UEM Sunrise BukuHubs has now expanded into a total of 12 locations across Malaysia.
Integrated Report 2021
CIMA, the cement manufacturing subsidiary of UEM Group, acknowledges the importance of combining sound financial performance with a commitment to environmental stewardship, social responsibility and good governance. The ESG principles are embodied in CIMA’s core values and integrated in its day-to-day operations.
Alternative Fuel and Raw Material
CIMA is the first cement manufacturer in Malaysia to adopt an alternative fuel combustion system, allowing the utilisation of recycled materials such as pulverized fly ash and palm kernel shell, whilst incorporating alternative raw material including SW421 and SW207 sludge as part of the efforts to reduce the dependence on fossil fuel and the need for landfills.
Greener Products and Solutions
CIMA’s composite cement was introduced in 2010, followed by various greener cement products, GGBS and high-performance concrete that is more sustainable. Some of CIMA’s key products have received the green label certification from the Singapore Environment Council.
Preserving the Environment
CIMA’s plants are certified with ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 certifications.
Waste Heat Recovery System
CIMA is currently in the process of installing a Waste Heat Recovery system which upon completion, will save up to 30% of its electricity consumption and reduce carbon dioxide emission by 24% in its Bahau plant, Negeri Sembilan.
Developing Human Capital
CIMA is on a journey to develop a more inclusive workforce through key policies on diversity, equity and inclusion. CIMA provide continuous learning and development opportunities for its staff across all position – from young, fresh entrants to senior leaders.
Giving Back to the Community
CIMA’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts are centered on two key pillars – community assistance and education.
CIMA TUITION PROGRAMME is a flagship programme to complement the official education provided in schools for Standard 6 Primary School children, helping over 3,500 UPSR applicants over the years.
BACK TO SCHOOL PROGRAMME is an annual initiative that provides uniforms, shoes, bags, and stationery items to underprivileged students.
BE MY MENTOR PROGRAMME is specially developed for Forms 4 and 5 participants where student mentors were invited as tutors in preparation for Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM). Over 1000 students have benefited from this initiative.
AL-QURAN RECITAL CLASS have been offered to children in the local community, ages 7 to 15, every Monday through Friday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at CIMA’s Perlis Plant Surau.
Business Ethics
CIMA’s Compliance Framework, Code of Conduct (for business partners) and Code of Ethics (for employees) outline the behavior expected from staff and business partners.
Risk Management
The Risk Management Framework allows CIMA to mitigate and manage any operational risk due to disruption or other unforeseen circumstances.
Health, Safety, Security and Environment
Relevant policies such as on drugs & alcohol, no smoking, stop work, environmental, health & safety are in place to ensure the work environment remains conducive, healthy and safe for employees of CIMA.
Anti-Bribery and Integrity
CIMA take a zero-tolerance approach to bribery and corruption and is committed to acting professionally, fairly and with integrity in all its business operations,
guided by policies such as Authorities Raid Procedure, Anti-Bribery & Anti-Corruption Guide and Whistle-blower Policy & Procedure.

SmartConnect
SmartConnect allows real-time monitoring of energy consumption on every level in a building and benchmarks the consumption against the Building Energy Index.
Developed by UEM Edgenta’s Property & Facility Solutions division, SmartConnect uses artificial intelligence (AI) to enable efficient energy management with machine learning for prescriptive analytics.
In 2021, four clients’ buildings under the management of UEM Edgenta obtained the Green Building Index Certification.
Energy Performance Contracts
Energy Performance Contracts (EPC) is one of UEM Edgenta’s initiatives that enables collaboration with customers to reduce their carbon emissions and overall energy expenditure.
The EPC covers retrofitting for the lighting system, chiller plant and air compressor plant.
In 2021, UEM Edgenta achieved more than 37,000kWh of total energy savings, a substantial increase from a cumulative 81 million kWh from 2017 to 2020.
UEM Edgenta is committed to creating meaningful impacts to benefit its communities through partnerships and collaborations within three key areas;

Virtual STEM Workshop is a collaboration between UEM Edgenta and SMK Jenjarom’s STEM club to organise a two-day virtual workshop on developing mobile app games in hopes of motivating and inspiring the students.
Tree Adoption is an initiative in partnership with Taman Tugu Project where UEM Edgenta adopted the Mersawa Paya tree to do its part in conserving the environment.
Animal Adoption Programme at Zoo Negara has been conducted for two consecutive years, where UEM Edgenta continued its adoption of a Nubian giraffe pair, ‘Mas Boy’ and ‘Mas Kira’ contributing to their healthcare and food.
Zakat Wakalah Disbursement has benefited 2,500 Asnaf under the Al-Gharimin, Fisabilillah and Asnaf Miskin categories. The recipients include UEM Edgenta’s employees and B40 local communities.
